#ThankYouMiami How-To: Learning Sushi 101 at Shooters Waterfront

God hit a home run when she invented sushi. It is quite literally the perfect food—a little meal in a chopstick-ready package. I love its texture, its flavor, and its versatility. I literally crave it 364 days out of the year.

When Shooters Waterfront in Fort Lauderdale announced that they were holding monthly "Sushi 101" classes, I was giddy with excitement. A choir of angels serenaded me as I opened my invitation to attend the June class. This was my opportunity to learn how to fend for myself in the sushi world. Given that Toni's Sushi is Miami Beach's only worthwhile sushi restaurant that doesn't break the bank and that they're only open between 6 p.m. and midnight, it was critical that I pick up the skills necessary to whip up some sushi the remaining 18 hours of the day. (One never knows when one might have a sushi emergency.)

I didn't have to try too hard to convince my friend Amber to come with me and thank god she came. Not surprisingly she is super knowledgeable in the kitchen—she's a kick-ass baker that makes delicious and gorgeous cakes—and her skills were the key to my sushi success. Despite the chef's detailed instructions, it was she who convinced me to wear the latex gloves provided in spreading the sushi rice on the nori and also she who showed me, through her struggles, to err on the side of wetting my hands to avoid a rice-glove fiasco.

We made two sushi rolls: a spicy tuna roll and a California roll. They didn't look perfect. My California roll pieces come out square instead of round. Plus, both rolls had way too much rice, making me feel like a pigeon after a wedding after eating only one roll. Nevertheless, they were easy to make and they tasted delicious. Amber and I were both blown away by the high quality of fish considering the meager $30 per person price tag, which includes unlimited sake and a certificate of completion.

Amber and I both left happy, which made me extra happy since I dragged her all the way to Fort Lauderdale on a Friday night. If you love sushi, the class is totally worth taking. The next one is scheduled for July 7 from 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. You can find more information here. (Pro tip: Grab a drink afterward in the waterfront, outdoor lounge. There's beautiful views, delicious drinks, and great vibes.)
