#ThankYouMiami How-To: Immersing Yourself in Miami Art Week/Art Basel 2017 Like A Local

I can't believe another year of Miami Art Week is already upon us. It feels like only a few months ago we were perusing the long maze of art at the Miami Beach Convention Center and painting our own Bob Ross renditions at the Super 8 art giveaway in Wynwood. Alas, yesterday kicked off the week with its signature luxury parties and starting today, the fairs begin to open.

There is a lot to do this week and it can be overwhelming, particularly if you're not a local. For years we've been honing our craft of sifting through the B.S., finding the nuggets of Miami Art Week gold, and focusing our energy only on those. Doing Basel as a local is about finding the good events, the free events, and never getting stuck in traffic. (Our already horrible traffic reaches an all-time fever pitch this week. Here's how to navigate traffic strategically.)

Celeste and I decided to divide and conquer the worthwhile events for maximum fun and maximum coverage. We will be debriefing on this blog post-Basel with a joint post on our experiences. On my end, I'm planning to hit the Amex Platinum House at the Miami Beach Edition (12/8-12/10), to check out the Mex/Art contemporary and pop art exhibition, and to marvel at the colorful works of Sophie Derrick (shown above) which will be hosted at the Contemporary Collective gallery (gallery F23 at SCOPE).

Of course, I will also be stopping by Art Basel for a glass of bubbly and a few hours of wandering because...tradition. (Pro tip: If you only want to check out Art Basel quickly and you're still here on Sunday, stop by without buying a ticket. Usually you can get them at a discount or people will gift you theirs at the door.) And, I will be keeping an eye on the Art Basel guides that are already out on the street if I find myself with free time and a desire for culture. I've listed the ones I trust below so you too can immerse yourself in Miami Art Week like a local. Happy art-ing!
